Why has Sinn Féin dropped a wealth tax? They have launched an alternative budget but failed to mention a tax on wealth.
True, they propose an increased tax on second homes, and a small ‘solidarity tax’ of 3% on incomes above €100,000. But the gaping hole is a tax on the assets of the rich.
In 2022, household wealth increased to over €1 trillion. Just 10% of the population own 54% of that wealth.
We live in a very unequal society and need to re-distribute that wealth to the poorer sections of society.
You cannot look for an ‘Ireland of the Equals’ and let the wealthy live a life of total privilege without paying proper taxes.
What a pity that Sinn Féin is now rowing back on a wealth tax.
