Stormont Endorses People Before Profit Rent Reduction And Rent Freeze In Significant Move

After the Assembly voted to pass his amendment for a rent reduction and a rent freeze this afternoon, Gerry Carroll MLA spoke of the importance of protecting renters during the cost of living crisis and called for pressure on the Minister for Communities to commit to implementing these measures. He said:

“Renters who have faced rent hikes in recent years are struggling to make ends meet, as cost of living soars and wages stagnate. I am delighted, therefore, that the Assembly has endorsed my amendment for a year long 10% rent reduction and a subsequent three year rent freeze.

“These measures will provide much needed relief to those who are forced to choose between rent, heating, or eating and put some money back in their pockets. It will address the rent hikes implemented by unscrupulous landlords at a time of great need.

“For too long the Assembly has ignored the plight and rights of renters, but today is an important step in the right direction. Pressure will be needed from renters and the wider public to ensure the minister commits to implementing these important measures.”
