Parties Of The Left Should Not Facilitate A Return Of FG Or FF To Government But Press On For A Left Government

The tide of change is to the left, the left must not help turn back the tide

In a statement, Richard Boyd Barrett TD for People Before Profit has urged Sinn Fein, the Green Party and the Social Democrats against agreeing and arrangement for government that sees a return of either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael to power.

The statement from Deputy Boyd Barrett comes as Sinn Fein, the Greens and the Social Democrats prepare to meet with Fianna Fail.

Deputy Boyd Barrett said that “the general election signaled a that a historic shift to the left was underway and parties of the left who had benefited from the political earthquake seen in the election should not seek to turn back the tide for change by facilitating the return to power of either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael.”

Deputy Boyd Barret said that the “policies of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are incompatible with giving effect to the voters demands for action and real change on the key areas of housing, health, climate action and giving working people a fair share of the wealth and growth in this country.”

Deputy Boyd Barrett said parties of the left should work together to break from the failed policies of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to deliver public and affordable housing on the scale needed, a quality national health service, affordable childcare and to ensure working people get a fair share of the economic wealth and growth in this country.

He said: “Even a short-lived minority left government could, with public support and mobilisation, quickly take some radical measures on housing, health, wages the cost of living and climate action and defy Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to vote against them.

“The tide for change in the election can be translated into a movement of people power that would force through some genuinely effective and radical measures that it would be difficult for Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to stop.”
